I was in your shoes not that long ago.
In 2019 I was visiting my great-uncle’s farm in rural Ohio. It was there I learned that my great-grandfather had intended to build a family compound where all his children and grandchildren could live together. This idea, though never fully realized, sparked my interest in creating a modern version of the concept.
Our Story
See, we had been living in the suburbs of Atlanta at the time, far from any relatives.
It was fine.
Not great, but not terrible either. Just….meh. We had moved there for work opportunities, but it didn’t take long for the isolation to set in. My parents were aging, my siblings were scattered across different states, and we found ourselves missing the close-knit family life we’d grown up with.
So We Decided We Had to Change. We Decided on Building a Family Compound. Our Immediate Family, Both Our In-Law’s, and My Sister and Her Family, All In One Place
We decided to take the plunge and start looking for land. After months of searching, we found the perfect spot about an hour outside the city. It was a beautiful 20-acre property with rolling hills and plenty of space for each family to have their own home. We worked with an architect to design a layout that allowed for privacy but also included shared spaces like a large outdoor kitchen, garden, and communal area where we could all gather.
Within two years, our family compound became a reality. My parents moved into their cozy cottage, my sister and her family built a house next door, and we had our own place just down the path. The kids could run freely between homes, and we found ourselves spending more time together as a family than we ever had before.
Looking back, deciding to build that family compound was one of the best choices we ever made. It brought us closer together and gave us the support system we didn’t have in the suburbs. Now, instead of feeling isolated, we feel connected and grounded in a way we hadn’t since we left our hometown.
But it was a tough process, especially when getting started!
